Abstract
985,366. Treating sheets of glass. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Aug. 28, 1963 [Sept. 20, 1962], No. 34008/63. Heading B2B. [Also in Division Dl] In apparatus for chemically treating both sides of a discrete sheet of glass 10 (e.g. in connection with the polishing of ground plate glass) in which a closed tank 12 of treating liquid is provided with entrance and exit apertures 18, 16 below the level of the liquid, the upper and lower edges of at least the entrance aperture are spaced from the upper and lower surfaces of the sheet and the surface of the liquid is subjected to a reduced pressure, e.g. by a pump P, so that the pressure in the liquid at the entrance aperture is equal to atmospheric and the liquid tends not to run from this aperture. In order that the pressure at the entrance aperture should be equal to atmospheric above and below the sheet, guides 49, 50 (see Fig. 6) over which the sheet slides have upward extensions 52, 54 which together with the ribbon, form a shallow pan into which liquid is continuously pumped by a pump P, the overflow passing to a lower level defined by weirs 56, 58. By arranging that the difference in height between the two levels is equal to the separation of the midpoints of the open slots above and below the sheet the desired equalizing of pressure is effected. In practice the adjustment is such that a slight flow runs from beneath the sheet to prevent air bubbles being trapped below the sheet; to catch this liquid a trough 46 is provided. To prevent fumes from the overflow liquid condensing on the sheet suction tubes 47 are arranged on either side of the ribbon. The upper and lower angles which define the parallel sided entrance aperture are preferably of an alloy. In the form shown the exit aperture 16 is formed as a mechanical squeegee 20 to remove reaction products. Specification 878,594 is referred to.
