Abstract

984,964. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Dec. 21, 1962 [Jan. 31, 19621, No. 3708/62. Heading F2F. In a brake distributer the arrangement is such that simultaneously with the connection of quick service bulb pressure, or a pressure resulting from the charging of a quick service bulb, to one side of an element 13 to close a control reservoir charging valve 8, there is slowly applied at a predetermined rate a pressure derived from the above-mentioned pressure to the opposite side of the element. As shown, the control reservoir is connected to passage 9 and is charged when the valve 8 is open from a supply source such as the brake pipe connected to passage 4. Upon initiation of brake application quick service will occur and connect the brake pipe to the quick service bulb and compressed air will flow into bulb 2 and chamber 3 connected by passage 1 to the quick service valve. The diaphragm 13 will move to the left to allow the valve 8 to be moved on to its seat by the spring 6 to close communication between the control reservoir and the brake pipe. At the same time the compressed air will slowly flow into bulb 16 and chamber 15 through the restriction 17. If the brake application has not developed the spring 14 will open the valve 8 when the pressures in chambers 3, 15 are substantially equal to connect the control reservoir to the brake pipe, allowing the distributer to move to the brake release position. Chambers 3, 15 are vented (by means not shown). If the brake application does develop further apparatus (not shown) will cause the control reservoir to remain disconnected from the brake pipe due, for example, to the building up of brake cylinder pressure. In a modification the valve 8 is on the opposite side of the diaphragm 13 so that the latter either presses the valve 8 on to its seat or allows it to be moved off by the spring 6. In a further embodiment the brake cylinder is connected via a restriction to the chamber 3 and bulbs 2 and 16 are connected by means of check valves to a first bulb open to the atmosphre via a restriction.
