Abstract
<PICT:0984831/C1/1> <PICT:0984831/C1/2> An apparatus for partitioning glass comprises a conveyer for moving individual glass sheets to a cutting berth, the cutting berth having glass cutting, scoring and snapping means for simultaneously producing a plurality of cuts in a glass sheet, there being included means immediately ahead of the cutting berth for reading cutting information for an entire sheet recorded as a plurality of closely spaced marks on a glass sheet as the latter moves into the cutting berth from the conveyer, and means effective after the cutting information has been read for setting up the glass cutting, scoring and snapping means to cut the entire sheet received in the cutting berth at cutting points determined by the marks on the sheet. A continuous glass ribbon 128 inch wide (Fig. 1) is conveyed past inspection lines and cut transversely by a "Z" cutter and passes to an "S" marker where the sheets are marked more closely than, but in proportion to, desired longitudinal cutting lines. Alternate sheets are then shunted sideways to one of two "S" cutters, passing through a photo-electric "S" mark detector the signals from which in conjunction with a stepping clock set up the cutters on the "S" cutter which then scores and cuts the sheets. The "S" cutter apparatus (Fig. 2) comprises conveyer belts 32A-32F by means of which the "Z" lengths of glass are fed to the cutting table, a bridge 37 carrying a plurality of solenoid-operated scoring devices 38 which travel across the glass sheet to score it, and fulcrum elements 58 which act in conjunction with successively operated hydraulic snapping devices 50-R to 50-64 having heads 52. The sheets are then passed on to a further conveyer 36. Defects in the glass are noted at the inspection lines and details of them are fed into a computer (not described) which determines the position of the "Z" and "S" cuts to produce the glass sheets, in sizes previously programmed, free from defects. A circuit for the "S" mark detector apparatus and control apparatus is given.
