Abstract

A water-free solution for phosphating the surfaces of metals, such as Fe, Al, Zn, Mg, Cd, or alloys thereof, comprises by weight 70-98% of a chlorinated hydrocarbon such as C2HCl3, C2Cl4, C2H2Cl4, C2H3Cl3, C2H4Cl2 or CH2Cl2, 0.1-6% of orthophosphoric acid, 1.5-25% of a monohydroxy alcohol such as an aliphatic or alicyclic alcohol containing 1-18 carbon atoms, e.g. n-butanol, and 0.1-0.5% of glacial acetic acid. Numerous alcohols are specified. Unstabilized chlorinated hydrocarbons may be used with stabilizers such as olefins, acetylenic compounds, hydrocarbons, phenols, alcohols, esters, ethers and epoxides, heterocyclic compounds containing N and O or S in ring, aldehydes, mercaptans, alkyl cyanamides/thioureas/amines/isocyanates, aryl amines, guanidines, diols, oximes, ketones, nitriles, amides, nitrates, thiophenes, pyrroles, nitroalkanes, sulphones, azines, aryl stibines and/or sulphoxides. The solution may be initially treated with powdered iron or other metals being treated, e.g. between 0.01 and 0.1% by weight of the solution, prior to contacting the degreased steel or other metal surface with the solution, e.g. by immersion or spraying.
