Abstract

984,503. Making wire fabric. UNITED WIRE WORKS Ltd. Sept. 5, 1963 [Sept. 14, 1962], No. 35049/62. Heading B3A. [Also in Division D1] A method of treating woven cloth for forming into endless belts for papermaking machines comprises forming throughout the length of each warp a series of stretched chevronshaped formations transversely directed in the plane of the cloth. Contiguous lengths of cloth may be successively treated by tensioning each length of cloth, clamping it at each end and midway between its length and applying a force transversely in the plane of the cloth to the intermediate clamped portions so as to displace the warps of the length of cloth, and subsequently stretching the length by moving the clamped ends further apart. Alternatively the warps of successive lengths may be angled out of the straight in one direction and stretched and then in the other direction. Further, a series of cloth lengths may be treated simultaneously. In Fig. 4 cloth 15 is unwound from roll 12 and after treatment is taken up on roll 14. After a length of cloth has been fed through the apparatus, front clamp 9 is operated by hydraulic ram 22 to clamp the cloth between jaws 9A and 9B. The cloth is then tensioned by driving the coiling roll 14 and the rear clamp 11 is operated by its ram 22 to clamp the cloth between jaws 11A and 11B. The middle clamp 10 is then operated through ram 37 to clamp the cloth between jaws 10A, 10B and the clamp 10 is moved transversely by hydraulic ram means (not shown in Fig. 4) on rollers 38, 39 so as to displace the warps into chevronshaped formation and the cloth is then stretched longitudinally by moving the clamps 9 and 11 further apart by pivoting them about pivots 23 through the medium of hydraulic rams 24, vertical slides 25 and pivoted levers 26. The clamp 10 is then released and the cloth is further tensioned longitudinally by moving clamps 9 and 11 slightly further apart. Clamps 9 and 11 are then released and the roll 14 driven to take up the treated length of cloth and replace it in the apparatus by the next successive length. The apparatus may alternatively have only two clamps arranged to treat the halves of each length successively or there may be a relatively large number of clamps, every second clamp being movable transversely so that several successive lengths of cloth may be treated simultaneously. Heating means may be incorporated for treating cloth having warps and/or wefts of copper berillium alloy or for setting, if the cloth incorporates synthetic resinous material.
