Abstract

A polymerization catalyst, especially for producing rubbery butadiene polymers with a high cis 1,4-addition content, comprises (a) an organometallic compound R3Al, R2AlH or R2Mg wherein R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or combinations of these radicals, (b) a titanium di-, tri- or tetra-chloride or bromide, and (c) lithium iodide. Long lists of organometallic compounds and also specific catalyst component combinations are given. In the examples, butadiene is polymerized in toluene with a catalyst formed in situ comprising triisobutyl aluminium, TiCl4 and LiI, and the reaction is terminated with an isopropyl alcohol/butyl phenol solution of 2,21-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-tert-butyl phenol). The polymer may be recovered by steam stripping the solvent after the optional addition of an antioxidant or by precipitation with alcohols. The product may be blended with natural rubber, cis 1,4-polyisopropylene or polyethylene.
