Abstract

An unsaturated polyester is copolymerized with one or more vinyl or vinylidene monomers, the process being characterized in that a first mixture (a) is prepared consisting of an unsaturated polyester resin and a vinyl or vinylidene monomer and a second mixture (b) is prepared the main constituents of which are a vinyl or vinylidene monomer and an accelerator, said second mixture being heated to a temperature beyond ambient and below boiling temperature under the influence of oxygen, oxidizing substances or light, and cooled down again. The second mixture (b) is then mixed with the first mixture (a) to form a mass which, after the addition of a catalyst, is worked up into the desired coating or article, the filler materials having been added to the mass in any stage of the process. Mixture (b) is preferably exposed to ultra-violet light while it is heated to 40 DEG to 80 DEG C.; this heating resulting in the partial polymerization of the vinyl or vinylidene monomer. Waxy hydrocarbons, preferably paraffin wax, may be added to mixture (b) and preferably mixture (a) contains two unsaturated polyester resins of different hardness. The filler material is desirably of at least two different particle sizes; fillers mentioned are quartz sand, quartz powder, dolomite powder, hard porcelain powder, calcined flint, calcined alumina and corundum. Thixotropic powders and pigments e.g. titanium dioxide may be added. Conventional polyesters, comonomers, catalysts and accelerators are used.ALSO:Wood, plywood, chip board, hard and soft fibre board, asbestos-cement plates and articles, concrete pipes, concrete containers and concrete parts, metallic surfaces, roofs and ceilings may be coated with a polyester resin composition formed from a mixture (a) consisting of an unsaturated polyester resin and a vinyl or vinylidene monomer and a mixture (b) the main constituents of which are a vinyl or vinylidene monomer and an accelerator. Mixture (b) is heated to a temperature beyond ambient and below boiling temperature under the influence of oxygen, oxidizing substances or light, cooled and then mixed with mixture (a) to form a mass which, after the addition of a catalyst, is worked up into the desired coating, filler materials having been added to the mass in any stage of the process. Paraffin wax may be added to mixture (b) and preferably mixture (a) contains two unsaturated polyester resins of different hardness. Fillers, e.g. quartz, dolomite, porcelain powder, calcined flint, calcined alumina and corundum; thioxotropic powders and pigments may be added.
