Abstract

Adhesive compositions comprise (1) an aqueous non-resinous urea-formaldehyde reaction product which has a solids content of 60% to 90% by weight and a pH of at least 7.0, and in which the male ratios of formaldehyde to urea is from 4.0 : 1 to 7.3 : 1 and (2) melamine, or a mixture of urea and melamine, in amount such that in the total composition the mole ratio of the units derived from formaldehyde to the amino groups and the units derived from amino groups is from 0.7 : 1 to 1.0 : 1. Hardening agents such as ammonium chloride in the presence of hexamethylenetetramine as a buffer may be present, as may extenders such as wheat flour, shell flour (e.g. walnut shell flour), wood flour and a -cellulose. Examples are given of the compositions and their use in the preparation of plywood, chipboard and sand-mould compositions. A liquid non-resinous urea-formaldehyde reaction product is prepared by dissolving 1 mole of urea in 4.9 mols. of formaldehyde (37% aqueous solution containing less than 1.5% MeOH, adjusted to pH 8.6-8.7 by IN caustic soda) at 30 DEG C., adjusting the pH to 8.9-9.0 and heating at 50-55 DEG C. for 1 to 2 hours, and evaporating under 50 mm. Hg in a tubular film evaporator. A chipboard is manufactured by heating and pressing pinewood chips which have been sprayed successively with an adhesive composition of the invention and a wax emulsion.
