Abstract
983,852. Centrifugal pumps. C. S. TARIFA, and J. V. PEDROSA. March 10, 1961 [March 18, 1960], No. 8862/61. Heading F1C. An hydraulic pump comprising an annular container 8, Fig. 1, forming a collecting chamber of U-shape cross-section rotatable on a shaft 1 and retaining a quantity of liquid at its outer periphery by centrifugal force, has at least one liquid inlet pipe 13 mounted rotatably on the shaft and extending radially into the container to terminate in an injection nozzle 14 disposed substantially tangentially with respect to the periphery of the chamber and facing in the direction of rotation, means for rotating the container in the same direction as the inlet pipe but at a higher speed to impart a high tangential velocity to the liquid injected therein, at least one liquid outlet pipe 7 extending radially into the container to scoop liquid therefrom, and means for maintaining the quantity of liquid retained in the container between maximum and minimum limits. The container is rotated at twice the speed of the inlet pipe through a V-belt drive 2 to 5. Alternatively, the container may be provided with internal vanes and rotated at a speed greater than that of the inlet pipe by the injected liquid. The outlet pipe 7 is stationary and faces in opposition to the direction of rotation. A disc 10, through which the container is driven, may be formed by one of the side walls of the container. The inlet and outlet pipes may be straight or curved, and a number of inlet pipes may be arranged in a single hollow disc. The outlet pipe may be of streamlined profile and the orifice therethrough may be of oval or circular cross-section. The radial depth of the liquid in the container is inherently controlled by the outlet pipe. However, further control may be obtained by a counterbalanced plate having a part with a V- shaped cut-out, the plate riding on the surface of the liquid to control the opening of the nozzle by the cut-out part. Alternatively, the inlet pipe may have a tube 38, Fig. 10, through which liquid entering opening 39 creates a back pressure in the nozzle 37 dependent on the quantity of liquid in the container. In a further alternative a pair of hollow arms mounted on the same shaft as, and rotating with, a pair of inlet pipes, curve to open into the container in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation so as to scoop away any surplus liquid.
