Abstract

In the semi-continous production of chipboard by intermittently feeding two streams of glue-coated wood particles into separate compartments, thereby forming inner and outer layers, and hot pressing the layers together, each stream is formed by treating a uniform mixture of fine and coarse wood particles having a constant particle size distribution with a constant proportion of an aqueous solution of ureaformaldehyde resin. The constant particle size distribution is obtained by forming fractions of particular ranges of particle sizes and combining in a particular proportion by volume. Separate fractions may be wetted, combined and dried, and then formed into further fractions. The degree of drying and mixing may be checked by weighing charges before gluing. Shavings produced by planing the chipboard before cooling and dust produced by grinding the chipboard after cooling may be recycled to the process. A detailed process for utilizing a number of kinds of wood, bark, and preformed shavings and dust is given.
