Abstract

983,349. Tyre-building drums. ERSTE MASCHINENFABRIK KARL - MARXSTADT VEB. July 16, 1963, No. 28127/63. Heading B7C. An inflatable diaphragm 3, on which a tyre casing is assembled, is supported by a plurality of members 4, 5 which are moved radially to expand the drum by rotating cam discs 6, 7 which have spiral grooves in which members 4, 5 engage. Drum end discs 9, 10 are axially slidable on coaxial shafts 2, 1, and members 4, 4, 5 are carried by discs 9, 10. Discs 6, 7 are turned by drivers 8 keyed to shaft 1 and carry racks 29, 30 engaging gear-wheels 28 mounted on the drivers. In use, tyre plies are applied to the rotating drum, which is expanded by turning shafts 1, 2 at different speeds, discs 6, 7 turning with shaft 1 and discs 9, 10, members 4, 5 turning with shaft 2. The diaphragm is then inflated through bores 22, 23 and simultaneously disc 10 is moved rightwards compressing spring 26, the racks and gear-wheels 28 ... 30 causing disc 9 to move leftwards. After shaping the tyre, the spring 26 serves to extend the drum axially again.
