Abstract

1524369 Tyre building drums ZELANT GAZUIT 31 Oct 1975 [20 June 1975] 45112/75 Heading B7C A radially expansible and contractible drum for building radial ply tyres comprises an annular elastic membrane 5 supported in its axially-central region by a plurality of shaping segments 4, each segment 4 being carried by a carrier 8 supported for radial movement by means including a pair of arms 3, the arms 3 carrying rods 11 movable in axially extending slots 12 of the carrier 8 and being pivoted to one another by a pivot 9 movable in a radially extending slot 10 of the carrier 8, the drum being characterized in that the segments 4 have edges shaped in zig-zag manner. The drum is radially expanded and contracted by rotation of a threaded shaft 6. The drum includes axially spaced beadclamping devices 7 each comprising a plurality of bead clamps 7a radially movable by means including levers 20 and pistons 19. The drum is provided with ply turn-up devices 22 for turning up tyre plies around bead assemblies supported, in use, by the clamping devices 7. Each turn-up device 22 comprises flexible strips 29 engageable with the tyre plies and connected by levers 28 to arms 24 pivotally mounted by rods 25. The arms 24 carry toothed sectors 26 meshing with racks 27 of pistons 21.
