983,258. Switches held set and freed mechanically. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Feb. 28, 1963 [March 13, 1962], No. 9687/62. Heading H2B. A switch assembly whereby each of a plurality of input lines can be connected to any one or more of a plurality of output lines but each output line can be connected to only one input line at a given time, comprises a matrix of switch units 27 arranged in transverse and longitudinal rows (only three switches of one transverse row being shown in Fig. 2). Each switch 27 comprises a fixed contact 29 and a co-operating contact on a spring blade 30 which is operated when a ball 32 acts upon a pivoted insulating lever 31. Input terminals 28 of all switches 27 in each transverse row are interconnected (as shown) to form a respective input line such as 40, while terminals 29 of all switches 27 in each longitidinal row are interconnected to form a respective output line, three such lines 41, 42 and 43 being indicated in Fig. 2. Channels 22 extend along each longitudinal row of switches and an insulating block 23 carrying a plunger 24 is slidably mounted in each channel 22. Depression of plunger 24 engages the ball 32 of the particular switch 27 above which the block 23 is selectively located. Thus all switches 27 in a transverse row may be simultaneously operated, but only one switch 27 in a longitudinal row can be operated at any one time. The functions of the input and output lines may be interchanged so that the plungers 24 are respectively associated with input lines instead of output lines.
