Abstract

The invention comprises 1-(2-31-carboxypropionyloxyethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - nitroimidazole and its salts such as the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, aliphatic amine, e.g. mono- or di-ethanolamine, and cyclic amine salts. The ester is prepared by treating 1 - b - hydroxyethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - nitroimidazole with succinic anhydride and is converted into its salts by known methods. Pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of protozoal infections comprise the above compound or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof in association with a pharmaceutical carrier or coating. The preparations may take forms suitable for oral, parenteral or topical administration, such as tablets, pills, dispersible powders, granules, emulsions, suspensions, syrups, elixirs, solutions (including sterile solutions in aqueous media, vegetable oils, propylene glycol or polyethylene glycol for injection), creams, ointments, pessaries or ovules.
