Abstract
983,110. Apparatus for underwater illumination. H. HUNGER, [trading as IBAK H. HUNGER [Firm of]]. Nov. 13, 1961 [May 10, 1961], No. 40542/61. Heading F4R. A lamp for underwater cameras, e.g. for television or kinematography, comprises a source of light consisting of a body member and one or more lamps arranged in relation to the body member so as to extend around the viewing angle of the camera lens without lying within the viewing angle. A glass or synthetic resin panel 3 having a concavity facing the camera lens 1 is arranged between the lens and a block 4 of light-permeable material secured to the camera housing. The space 8 between the panel 3 and the block 4 is filled with liquid. The opposite surfaces of the block are plane and a groove 13 is provided in the block outside the viewing angle of the lens to receive a lamp 12. The groove 13 has a semi-translucent reflecting layer 16 and a similar layer is provided on the surface of the block adjacent the groove to produce even illumination. The block is enclosed in a shield 17 spaced from the block and having a reflecting surface. The edges of the shield may be protected by a ring of plastic 20 which may be spring-mounted to enable the block to be brought close to the object to be viewed. In place of the ring 20, a ring of cavities enclosing spring-mounted bristles may be provided. When in use in muddy water, clear water may be fed from a pipe 25 into the space between the block 4 and shield 17 and will then pass across the front surface of the block. A pendulum or bubble indicator may be provided to indicate the inclination of the apparatus to the vertical, the indicator being located within the viewing angle of the lens.
