[Also in Division E2] A flying helmet comprises a rigid shell with a part pivoting to a lower position where it protects the back of the head and biased to an upper position, the part carrying a spring loaded member to engage a two part catch on the shell which is controlled by an emergency release device to break the two part catch and allow the pivoted part to move to the upper position. The rigid flying helmet with pivotally mounted visor 2 is secured to the head by fabric flaps 3, 4 secured by a zip fastener 5. The flap 4 is made in parts 6, 7 fastened by studs 8 and eyelets 9 secured by pins passing through holes in the studs, All the pins are connected by a cord 11 to a rip cord 13. The rigid back part 14 pivoted to the shell has at each side a spring hinged hook 17 which engages a section 24 of a catch comprising sections 23, 24. The sections 23, 24 are releasably held together by a pin which engages in complementary grooves in section 23 and in a boss on section 24 engaging with section 23. The pin is connected to a cord which extends through a tube 32, 34 on either side of the helmet to the top where the cord connects with the cord 11. When the rip cord is pulled the pins are released from the studs to release the flap parts and the pins are withdrawn from the catch sections 23, 24 to free the section 24 and to allow the part 14 to pivot upwardly under the action of a spring. The helmet 'includes an oxygen mask and a pressure bag which embraces the head from the cheeks to the nape of the neck. Specification 844,060 is referred to.
