Apparatus for peeling veneer from a log comprises a knife 3 which is rockable on an axis extending along its edge through a limited angle in both directions from a neutral position corresponding to a predetermined angle of cutting under the influence of the pressure of the log and the veneer against the knife during the peeling operation. The knife is adjustably clamped between a pair of members 4a, 4b of a knife holder having a socket 7 rotatable about a pivot 8 rotatably journalled in a frame member 1a and a socket 9 rigidly connected to a pivot 10 rotatably journalled in a frame member 1b. The knife holder has an arm 15 carrying a member 16 disposed between a pair of bolts 17a, 17b urged against the member 16 by springs in fingers 19a, 19b carried by a plate 20 clamped to the pivot 8. The pivot 10 is connected by a universal joint 25 and a rod 24 to a rotatable eccentric which, during a peeling operation, imparts a reciprocatory movement to the knife. The knife is inclined at an angle α of 2 degrees to a line 14 perpendicular to a line 12 extending through the edge of the knife and the axis of rotation of the log which is disposed to the right of the line 14. A chamfer 11 is provided at an angle of 20 degrees to the front surface of the knife and an angle γ equalling 18 degrees from the line 14, the knife having an included angle # of 16 degrees. In the apparatus, the log is rotated between a pair of pivoted levers and, during peeling, its axis moves along an arc of a circle, the plate 20 carrying the spring-pressed bolts 17a, 17b engaging the member 16 on the knife-holder being rocked by rotation of the pivot 8 in dependence on the pivotal movement of the levers. The action of the log and veneer on opposide sides of the knife automatically rocks the knife against the pressure of the spring-pressed bolts to position the knife at the most suitable angle for the peeling operation.
