Abstract
982,173. Vehicle fluid transmission systems. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. June 12, 1961 [June 13, 1960], No. 20648/60. Heading B7H. A vehicle transmission has an engine-driven swash-plate pump 5 supplying pressure liquid to a motor 6 for driving the wheels of the vehicle, liquid actuated means 7, 8 vary the stroke of the pump and/or motor automatically to accord with the load on the motor, and a driver operable valve 16 in series with an engine speed responsive valve 10, whereby on valve 16 being actuated when engine speed is below a predetermined value, the means 7, 8 is operated to lower the speed ratio between the engine and the vehicle. Chambers on either side of diaphragm 18 in valve 10 are connected directly and via choke 19, respectively, to engine-driven pump 21, a valve 12, 13 connected to the diaphragm being biased open by spring 14. A variable restriction 22 is set by accelerator pedal 23. In Fig. 1, with engine speed below the predetermined value, valve 12, 13 opens and on braking of the vehicle valve 16 opens and fluid flows from cylinder 8 to decrease the speed ratio until piston 7 closes port 9 to aid braking. The lowest speed ratio to which the transmission can be set can be selected by using a series of ports 9, 9a, 9b, 9c, and a manual valve 25, which can replace valve 16 if all the ports can be closed by valve 25. In Fig. 2, on braking a second brake valve 30 connects valve 10 to valve 31 connected to reservoir 17 via port 33. A pivoted lever 34 biased by spring 42 to open inlet 32, is acted upon by pistons 37, 38 connected by pipes 39, 40, respectively, to the line between the inlet of pump 5 and outlet of motor 6 and to a cylinder operated by brake pedal 41. Pressure rises in pipe 39 when motor 6 tends to drive pump 5. For a given brake pressure, valve 32 is opened to reduce the speed ratio until the forces on lever 34 balance. Hence if the torque transmitted from the wheels to the engine is high, the valve 31 closes to stop further speed ratio reduction at a lower pedal pressure as compared with instances when the torque transmitted to the engine is low. A valve 44 operated from the hand brake lowers the speed ratio on application of the hand brake with the vehicle speed below a predetermined value.
