Abstract
981,627. Physiological tests. ASTRO-SPACE LABORATORIES Inc. Nov. 23, 1962' No. 44433/62. Heading A5K. An equipment for observing and measuring heart beats by means of the vibrations they induce in the body employs a platform, to receive the patient, mounted on an air bearing, to avoid the possibility of vibrations being communicated from the building or other extraneous sources. The platform 24, on which the patient is located by means of straps 64 and a saddle member 62, is supported on an upper bearing member 36, the lower surface of which is part spherical of large radius of curvature. This surface mates with the upper surface of the lower bearing member 54 and the interior cavity 52 of the latter is supplied with air or gas, under pressure, which, escaping through a ring of apertures in the upper wall, supports the platform in a frictionless manner. Wide swings of the platform during the initial balancing of the patient are prevented by a flanged ring 66 which is moved upwards to embrace the upper bearing member. The vibrations induced in the patient by the heart are detected by a strain-gauge type of accelerometer, in which a mass of high inertia is supported on strain wires attached to the platform and which are stretched or relieved differentially by the vibrations. The gauge is connected electrically to a recording instrument which may also be associated with a timer or electrocardiograph.
