Abstract

981, 297. Producing neutrons. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 2,1964 [Jan. 14,1963], No. 1561/63. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6P. Neutron generation is effected by the bombardment of tritium by ionised deuterium. The deuterium is ionised by an R.F. magnetic field and the ions are directed by a D.C. electrostatic field to a target electrode on the surface of which tritium is absorbed in a layer of titanium. The apparatus is formed of a cylindrical glass tube in which deuterium is produced by an electrically heated container filled with titanium deuteride. A coil wound round the tube exterior produces the ionising field. To reduce the emission of secondary electrons from the target a negatively charged electrode is mounted in front of the target. Ion acceleration is effected by a further electrode, positively charged, mounted in front of both the target and negative electrode. Sputtering of the metal of this further electrode by the ion plasma is prevented by a glass coating. The target may contain deuterium in place of tritium
