Abstract

A copolymer having improved basic dye receptivity comprises at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile, up to 19.95% by weight of at least one other copolymerizable mono-olefinic monomer and from 0.05 to 2.0% by weight of a compound selected from the group consisting of 4-carbovinoxyphthalic acid and its anhydride. The invention also comprises a composition comprising 80 to 98% by weight of the composition of the above copolymer together with 2-20% by weight of a copolymer comprising 10 to 70 per cent by weight acrylonitrile and 30-90% by weight of at least one other copolymerizable mono-olefinic monomer. Suitable copolymerizable monomers include acrylic alpha chloroacrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylates, methacrylates and alpha chloroacrylates, vinyl chloride and bromide, vinylidene chloride, 1-chloro-1-bromo-ethylene, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide and methacrylamide, methyl vinylketone, vinyl carboxylates, N-vinyl imides, methylene malonic esters, N-vinyl carbazole, vinyl furane, allyl vinyl esters, vinyl sulphonic acid and vinyl benzene-sulphonic acids, ethylene a ,b -dicarboxylic acids, styrene, vinyl naphthalene and vinyl-substituted tertiary N-heterocyclic amines. The copolymers may be prepared by mass, solution, suspension or emulsion polymerization using known free radical catalyst systems. Belgian Specification 594,994 is referred to.ALSO:A copolymer having improved basic dye receptivity comprises at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile, up to 19.95% by weight of at least one other copolymerisable mono-olefinic monomer and from 0.05 to 2.0% by weight of a compound selected from the group consisting of 4-carbovinoxyphthalic acid and its anhydride. Any basic or cationic dyestuff can be used for dyeing the copolymers. The invention also comprises a composition comprising 80-98% by weight of the composition of the above copolymer together with 2-20 by weight of a copolymer comprising 10-70% by weight acrylonitrile and 30-90% by weight of at least one other copolymerisable mononic. Among basic dyestuffs which can be used to dye the composition are Fuchsine N Powder, Genacryl Pink 3b. Anacryl Red 6B, Sevron Brilliant Red 4b, Sevron Red GL, Sevron Red L, Grenacryl Orange G, Sevron Yellow R, Sevron Yellow 3RL, Sevron Blue BGL, Sevron Blue B, Sevron Blue 2b, Sevron Brown YL. Belgian Specification 594,994 is referred to.
