[Also in Division B3] A portable rock drill 15 comprises a drive motor 50 having a drive shaft 66, a driven shaft 69 having pinions 78, 79, a coupling 67 connecting the shafts, a hollow drill spindle 82, gears 80, 81 axially slidable on the spindle, means 120 for moving the gears on the spindle, and means 95 for supplying cooling fluid to the bore of the spindle. The coupling is a centrifugal clutch, and the gearing may be set in neutral, and for slow and high speed rotation. Water supplied by the passage 95 is prevented from reaching the gearing by a seal device 97 and a bearing seal 108, and should the device fail water leaks through a port 107. The drill is raised and lowered on posts 11, 11a by chains 31, 31a the posts being adjustable for inclination to base 13. The motor is electric pneumatic hydraulic or an I.C. engine. The spindle is connected to a string of drill rods or a core barrel. The drill may be used without the posts and base, a circular grip 135 facilitating handling.
