Abstract
The invention comprises compounds having the formula <FORM:0981194/C2/1> or a salt thereof in which R represents an alkyl group containing one to six carbon atoms 5 - b - ionylidene - 4 - amino - pentanone - 2 is specified. These compounds may be made by reacting an aldimine having the formula <FORM:0981194/C2/2> in which R is hydrogen or an -alkyl group containing one to six carbon atoms with acetone at a temperature between 0 DEG and 50 DEG C. The imine may be formed in situ from the corresponding aldehyde which may be b -ionylidene acetaldehyde by adding ammonia or methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, isobutyl-, or amyl-amine. The b -aminoketone may be purified by pouring the reaction mixture into a dilute aqueous solution of sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid and then washing with an ether or an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon. The b -aminoketone may be de-aminated to give the corresponding C18-ketone by heating under reduced pressure or by heating in the presence of acetic acid, preferably in ethanol or methanol. The C18-ketone may be isolated by pouring the reaction mixture into water, and extracting with petroleum ether.
