Abstract

981,067. Domestic juke-boxes. W. HAGEN. May 29, 1961 [May 27, 1960], No.19293/61. Heading G5R. A random selection of the 'A' and 'B' sides of 30 disc gramophone records, is stored vertically in a linear store 3, Fig. 2, and played appropriately as to side and rotational direction by a doublesided pick-up 77, Fig. 3, while clamped vertically between drive means 20, 22, Fig. 4. Selection is made by actuation of rockers 95, Fig. 10 the playing carriage 4, Fig. 2 moving once to the left and back to play all selected 'A' sides in stored order from the right and then all the 'B' sides in stored order from the left, upon actuating a START control 5. A REJECT control 6 and a REPEAT control 7 may be operated during playing of any side and these controls are returned to inoperative position by the mechanism in carrying out these functions. CARRIAGE DRIVE AND RECORD SELECTION. A pair of reversed-phased driving motors, 14, 15, Fig. 6 are alternately energized to drive the records and carriage in the related directions. The main drive-shaft 18 carries a pinion 19 Fig. 5, which drives a pinion 23 to traverse the carriage by means of cords and pulleys, 25, 26 until a selection is reached. A member 104, Fig. 9, catches in the first available right-facing lug 98, raised by the 'A' selectors 95 (and trails over the 'B' lugs 99) and the member 100 is rocked about 102 to cancel the selection, to move the pinion 38 (Fig. 5) out of engagement, halting the carriage and to engage the record transfer/play means. At the end of play/ transfer-back, the pinion 38 is re-engaged to find the next selection. After the last 'A' side has been played, the carriage 4 moves to actuate a limit rod 78, Fig. 4, relatively to the right to reverse the drive-motors and members 105 and 101 take over from 104 and 100 respectively to play the 'B' sides selected by raising the left-facing lugs 99. After the last 'B' side has been played the carriage restores the limit rod to its initial position, which restores the original direction of the motors, ready for next time and returns the START control 5 to its inoperative position, stopping the machine. RECORD TRANSFER AND PLAY. A cycling cam-disc 30 is intermittently driven from the main drive shaft 18, Fig. 5, by a gear train 38-34 on an arm 33, which may be moved to disengage gears 19 and 38. Drive is engaged when the carriage is halted and an arm 65, Fig. 3 behind the selected record, advances it along a rail 112, Fig. 4 to where it is engaged between members 20, 22 by movement of an arm 21, and the drive to the cam 30 is halted after 180 degrees rotation. The pick-up arm 77 is biased sideways in the appropriate direction between two limit-checks 81 and urged with transducing force against the record by a blade-spring 83 engaging in appropriate grooves in a cam-disc 76, Fig. 3. At the end of play of the side, pick-up actuated means restart the cam-disc 30 which makes a further 180 degrees rotation to return the record to the store and re-engage drive to the carriage. RECORD INDEX. A tray-form member 11 with written details of the record sides, slides out of the case 1 Fig. 2 in relation to the selector panel 10. ALTERNATIVE EMBODIMENTS. A push-button mechanism (Figs. 11, 12 not shown) is briefly described. Also, a modified actuation means for the record clamp (Fig. 13,14 not shown) is detailed. The record clamp is shown for 1 # inch centre holes but a <SP>9</SP>/ 32 inch arrangement for British records is envisaged.
