Abstract

981,003. Composite polyamide filaments. ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 24, 1962], No. 33140/63. Heading B5B. A composite multi-filament thread is made by simultaneously extruding through each orifice of a spinneret two melts of dissimilar polyamides, and drawing the resultant threads, the polyamides being (a) poly-#-caprolactam and (b) the copolyamide prepared from #-caprolactam and the salt of hexamethylene diamine and terephthalic acid. The composite threads may be sheath/core or side-by-side type. The drawn threads may be crimped by allowing them to relax either immediately after drawing or after winding on a bobbin. During relaxation, crimping may be increased by heat-treatment, using e.g. warm air, warm water, or steam. The drawn threads may be knitted into a fabric, which may be subjected to shrinkage. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a melt prepared for poly-#- caprolactam granules is fed to chamber 4 via chamber 2 and sand-pack 3, and flows through channel 5 to communal chamber 6. A second melt, prepared from 40 parts #-caprolactam and 60 parts of terephthalic acid hexamethylene diamine salt, is fed to chamber 10 via chamber 8 and sand-pack 9 and flows through channel 11 to communal chamber 6. A composite sheath/ core type multi-filament thread is extruded from orifices 12, is drawn over a pin and then allowed to relax. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) the two melts enter communal chamber 6 from opposite sides of a partition 13 therein, so that side-by-side filaments are extruded from the orifices 12.
