Abstract

A composition comprising (1) from 0.01 to less than 5% by weight of a siloxane having at least 3 units per molecule of formula RHSiO and any remaining units of formula R3SiO 1/2 in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing less than 7 carbon atoms, (2) from more than 95% to 99.99% by weight of an organopolysiloxane having a viscosity of at least 100 cps. at 25 DEG C. and in which substantially all of the molecules contain at least two silicon bonded hydroxyl groups, there being 1.9 to 2 organic radicals (saturated, unsaturated or halogenated) per silicon atom, (3) stannous octoate and (4) an organic solvent for (1), (2) and (3). The stannous octoate may be present in amount 0.1 to 2.0% by weight The hydroxylated silicones are preferably linear polymers containing monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radicals, e.g. chloromethyl, chlorophenyl or trifluoropropyl radicals. Solvents specified are toluene, xylene, benzene and perchloroethylene. In the example trimethylsiloxy end blocked methylhydrogen polysiloxane and dimethylpolysiloxane were dissolved in xylene and stannous octoate added. The compositions may be used for coating paper. Specifications 804,198 and 804,199 are referred to.ALSO:Paper, e.g. kraft, glassine, parchment, paperboard and chip board is coated with a composition comprising: (1) from 0,01 to less than 5% by weight of a siloxane having at least 3 units per molecule of formula RHSiO and any remaining units of formula R3SiO 1/2 in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing less than 7 carbon atoms, (2) from more than 95% to 99,99% by weight of an organo polysiloxane having a viscosity of at least 100 cS at 25 DEG C. and in which substantially all the molecules contain at least two silicon bonded hydroxyl groups, these being 1,9-2 organic radicals per silicon atom, (3) stannous octoate, and (4) an organic solvent for (1), (2) and (3). Solvents specified are: xylene, toluene, benzene and perchloroethylene. Coating may be by brushing, spraying, immersion or knife roller coating. In an example glassine kraft paper was treated on both surfaces with a solution of trimethylsiloxy end-blocked methyl hydrogen polysiloxane and dimethylpolysiloxane and stannous octoate in xylene, dried at 80 DEG C. and heated at 120 DEG C. to cure the siloxane.
