Abstract
A sacrificial anode which is particularly suitable for the protection of oil tanker storage and ballast tanks comprises an annular body 1 of magnesium or magnesium alloy which is cast around a zinc-coated tubular steel core 2. The ends of the core which project at each end of the anode are sealed by welded-on plates 3 which carry a lug 4 with a slotted hole 6 and a lug 5 with a plain hole therein respectively. The anode is of length, say 10 feet, to extend between parts 7, 8 of the ship's structure, the lug 5 being bolted directly to the part 8 whilst <PICT:0980860/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0980860/C6-C7/2> the lug 4 is bolted to the part 7 but insulated therefrom by washers 11. Relative movement of the parts 7, 8 is taken up by the slot 6. In modifications, the supporting lugs are formed by flattening the ends of the core tube 2 or by slotting the core tube ends and inserting lug plates thereinto. U-shaped plates may be welded to the core tube, particularly in the central region thereof, to provide keys for the anode material and a net, e.g. of nylon, may be wrapped around the anode to prevent pieces of anode metal falling therefrom as it approaches the end of its useful life.
