Abstract

980,681. Cold and heat retaining vessels. CYROGENIC ENGINEERING CO. Feb. 20, 1962 [Sept. 18, 1961], No. 6513/62. Heading F4U. An insulated container comprises an inner shell 11 spaced from and heat-insulated from an outer shell 10, the inner shell being adapted to support therein a plurality of cannisters 50 or other articles on a deck 46 which is rotatable so that any one cannister &c. may be brought into alignment with an access opening provided in the container for insertion or removable of such cannister or other article, the access passage having cross-sectional dimensions substantially less than the axial length thereof. The apparatus shown is intended for the storage of physiological specimens used in the artificial insemination of livestock, the specimen being stored in the cannister 50 on ampoulecarrying canes 58. Each cannister has a shoulder 51 by which it is supported in a corresponding hole formed in the deck 46. The access opening through which a cannister is inserted or removed is formed by a tube 64A surrounded by and heat-insulated from an outer tube member 64. The opening is normally closed by a capped plug 13 comprising three sections 86 of balsa wood. A cannister may be lifted up and suspended within the access opening (see e.g. Fig. 1b) when for example its contents are to be inspected or changed. The heat insulation between the inner and outer casings 10, 11 and between the tubes 64a and 64 is preferably a laminate consisting of alternate sheets of glass paper and metal foil, the space between the shells and tubes being evacuated. Any residual gas pockets are removed by activated charcoal 18 stored in a housing 17 in communication with the heat-insulating space between the shells. The inner shell 11 is filled with a cryogenic liquid such as liquid nitrogen in which the cannisters are normally immersed.
