Abstract

In the preparation of cyclo-alkanone oximes by the action of a nitrosation agent on a cycloalkane contained in a tank 1 wherein the reaction mixture is irradiated by a light source 2, the reaction mixture is shielded from heat rays by circulating a coolant, such as water, air or nitrogen, in a transparent jacket 3 surrounding the light source, a transparent baffle tube 4 being arranged in the jacket so that the coolant, which is introduced through inlet 5, first flows in direct heat exchange with the reaction mixture and subsequently flows through a path which is nearer the light source but where there is no heat exchange with the reaction mixture. The <PICT:0980518/C2/1> coolant finally leaves the apparatus through outlet 7. In an example, cyclohexanone oxime hydrochloride is produced by reacting cyclohexane with a gaseous mixture of nitrosyl chloride and hydrogen chloride under the influence of a high-pressure mercury lamp, the temperature of the reaction liquid being maintained at 15 DEG C. Another example relates to the production of cyclo-octanone oxime hydrochloride by reacting cyclo-octane with a mixture of dinitrogen tetroxide, chlorine and hydrogen chloride. A third example described the production of cyclododecanone oxime hydrochloride. Nitrosation agents referred to, other than those mentioned above, are nitrosyl sulphuric acid; and a mixture of nitrogen monoxide and chlorine.
