Abstract

980,414. Etching. CROSFIELD ELECTRONICS Ltd. Feb. 12, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5864/62. Heading B6J. A copper cylinder 1 to be etched to form a printing-surface thereon is covered with a gelatinous tissue which has been exposed through an original, developed and washed so as to constitute an etching resist varying in resistive strength according to the tone (i.e. depth of etching) required. The covered cylinder is rotated in a bath 3 of ferric chloride solution circulated from a sump 29 by a pump 30 and return pipe 31, distilled water for progressive dilution of the etchant, to increase the penetrating power thereof and enable it to etch areas protected by progressively harder resist, being supplied through a valve 18 operated by a switch 20 through a delay device 19. A circumferential strip of the cylinder including a control patch comprising a series of spaced bars 2 is scanned by a photo-cell 7, the output of which is passed through a frequency filter which passes only the signal resulting from scanning of the control patch to relays 9, 10. When etching has proceeded to the required depth, the patch 2 becomes sufficiently visible to cause the relays to be actuated. The relay 9 closes the valve 18, and the relay 10 after a delay opens a drain 12 to empty the sump and bath, and opens a valve 15 to rinse the cylinder with water from a spray pipe 13. In another form, the control patch is a solid dark circular area, and a white patch or a magnetic patch axially aligned with the control patch is sensed by a second device controlling a gating circuit to allow the signal from the photo-cell to pass to the relays only while the control patch is being scanned. An arrangement of lamps associated with diodes indicates the progress of the etching.
