Abstract
A siloxane having units of the formula <FORM:0980388/C1/1> wherein R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, Z is an ethylene or a hydrocarbon-substituted ethylene group, HO is interconnected to N through 2 C atoms, a is 0 or 1, n is an integer of from 3 to 15, b is 0, 1 or 2, R is H, a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or a unit of the formula <FORM:0980388/C1/2> and the N atom is separated from Si by at least 3 C atoms of each CnH2n group (see Division C3), is used as a flocculating agent for aqueous dispersions of clay. Comparative tests given in Example (5) show the superiority of the siloxane of Example (1) over other aminoalkylorganosilicon compounds in flocculating aqueous dispersions of clay.ALSO:A siloxane comprising units of the formula <FORM:0980388/C3/1> wherein R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, Z is an ethylene or a hydrocarbon-substituted ethylene group, HO is interconnected to N through 2 C atoms, a is 0 or 1, n is an integer of from 3 to 15, b is 0, 1 or 2, R is H, a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or a unit of the formula <FORM:0980388/C3/2> and the N atom is separated from Si by at least 3 C atoms of each Cn\H2n group, can be made by reacting a siloxane comprising aminoalkylsiloxane units of the formula <FORM:0980388/C3/3> with a mono-epoxide, preferably in the presence of a lower aliphatic alcohol or water as catalyst. Suitable epoxides are olefin oxides, epoxy alcohols and glycidyl ethers and esters, examples of which are given. The siloxanes may be co-polymerized with conventional siloxanes containing Si-bonded saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals. In a typical example (1) ethylene oxide was passed into an ethanol solution of a liquid delta aminobutylmethylsiloxane -dimethylsiloxane copolymer to yield an oil of the formula <FORM:0980388/C3/4> wherein Me=methyl; the cyclic tetramers <FORM:0980388/C3/5> were similarly prepared in Examples (2) and (3) respectively. Uses: As flocculating agents for aqueous dispersions of clay; and as complexing or co-ordinating agents for removing metal ions, particularly cupric and ferric ions, from aqueous solution.
