Abstract

980,073. Ultrasonic pick-up tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 28, 1961 [May 13, 1960], No. 16996/60. Heading H1D. In an ultrasonic pick-up tube, the vibration sensitive target 2 is initially, positively charged, e.g. by a fast flood beam from annular cathode 10, and is then exposed to an ultrasonic image, e.g. for five cycles, and to a slow flood beam from cathode 10, for the formation of a negative charge image, and is finally discharged to an equilibrium potential by a scanning beam from cathode 5 to obtain output signals, e.g. from conductive target backing 3 or from an electron multiplier into which the returning electron beam is directed. The target may be positively charged, and the negative charge image formed during frame-return periods of the scanning beam. Suitable operating potentials are given. The tube may be immersed in a longitudinal magnetic field. The target may comprise a continuous quartz crystal supported at its inner surface by a metal grille which may also constitute the grid 9 across one end of wall anode 8. Alternatively, the target may comprise elementary crystals arranged in the apertures of a metal grille.
