[Also in Division B7] In a variable mechanical advantage lever system for applying a thrust to a pitman 18, e.g. for operating the brakes of a motor vehicle, a lever 10 pivoted at 11 has an effort arm 13 and a shorter working arm 14 formed with cam forces 16, 17, 15 which are engaged by a roller follower 19 on the pit- man, so that when the effort arm is moved anti-clockwise against a bias spring 12 the cam rise 17 first causes the pitman to move with a low mechanical advantage to take up slack in the system, after which the slope of the face 15 provides a high mechanical advantage for the braking effort. Further movement of the lever reduces the mechanical advantage to allow a pumping action if fluid in an associated hydraulic system is low. Guide links 20 pivoted at 21 to the pitman constrain the latter to substantially linear movement. The lever arm 13 may carry a pendant pedal, or in another form (not shown) a pedal above the pivot 11.
