Abstract

A composition for simultaneously shampooing and dyeing human hair comprises an aqueous medium including a dye which fixes directly on the hair and which brings it to the desired final colour without any simultaneous or subsequent chemical treatment, an assistant which facilitates fixing of the dye, a detergent and an inorganic thickening agent in an amount such that the composition is in the form of a gel, paste, cream or thick, viscous liquid. The preferred assistants are n-propanol and iso-propanol either singly or in admixture. Other specified assistants are benzyl alcohol, sodium chloride and sodium sulphate; they may be employed in concentrations of 4-15% by weight. The compositions may also contain a minor proportion of an organic acid, e.g. acetic acid. The specified types of dyes are the water-insoluble, disperse or especially the pre-metallized acid dyes. The preferred thickener is powdered magnesium montmorillomite which may be added as a 3% W/V aqueous dispersion that has been prepared in a colloid mill. The preferred detergent is monoethanolamine lauryl sulphate containing one or more fatty acid conditioners. A method of simultaneously dyeing and shampooing hair is described wherein the composition is applied like a normal shampoo but may be left in contact with the hair for 3-5 minutes if stronger shades are required.
