Abstract

Crystalline zeolite and solvents having molecular sieve properties and a pore size of 4 <\>rA units are prepared by first treating an uncalcined silica-alumina clay with sodium hydroxide solution to form a sodium alumino-silicate precipitate which does not have molecular sieve properties; treating the precipitate with sufficient mineral acid to convert it at a pH of 3 to 4 to an acidic colloidal product in which ionexchanging properties are retained; and thereafter treating the acidic colloidal product at temperatures of from 180-220 DEG F. with a dilute sodium hydroxide solution containing from 40-160 parts by weight of NaOH and from 170-3600 parts by weight of water per 100 parts of the said sodium alumino-silicate precipitate, the molar ratio of H2O to NaOH in the solution being in the range from 30-100. The first alkali treatment may be carried out at a temperature of from 200-800 DEG F., the alkali preferably has a concentration of 3 to 30 g. NaOH per 100 ml. of solution and the amount of alkali based on clay is preferably 0.4-4 weight ratio. Alumina-silicate clays used in the process are kaolin, kaolinite, halloysite, bentonite and bauxite.
