A permanently magnetized drum 1 rotating about a horizontal axis has a liquid, containing ferrous and non-ferrous impurity, flowed over the drum from a point at or near the apex (as from funnel 17, Fig. 2, or funnel 20, Fig. 3) and adherent deposit is collected by means of a scaper (16 or 19) after passage beneath a squeezing roller (15 or 18). The extraction of impurities from a non-turbulent film is said to produce greater efficiency and the higher deposit of ferrous impurity adherent to the drum acts as a trap to collect the non-ferrous matter.
