979,071. Electromagnets. NORTH ATLANTIC INDUSTRIES Inc. May 29, 1961, No. 19351/61. Heading H1P. A rotary electromagnetic actuator comprises an armature 13 mounted on a non-magnetic shaft 15 having helical faces which co-operate with similarly shaped faces on polepieces 11, 12. Shaft 15 is prevented from moving axially when coil 19 is energized by thrust bearing 29, and is rotated to a rest position by spring 21 when coil 19 is de-energized. Modifications are described whereby greater torque is, produced by durcasing the air gap with increasing radius, by changing the helical pitch and lead or by making the co-operating faces have two or more helical steps.
