A single reinforcing member 51 is located in a longitudinal groove 49 in the neck 42 under the finger-board 47; an adjustable means, such as a screw-threaded sleeve 56, at the end of the member 51 remote from the body 41 of the instrument causes relative movement of the neck 42 and the member 51, thereby imparting a stress to the neck and the reinforcing member. Transverse wedges may be inserted into the neck between the frets.
