Abstract

Block polymers are made by the polymerization of C2-C18 vinyl group-containing olefines in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst by a process which involves polymerizing during 50 to 97% of the period a monomer which gives rise to a hard homopolymer having a melting point above 100 DEG C., and during the remainder of the period polymerizing a monomer or monomers which gives rise to a soft polymer having a second order transition point substantially below that of the selected hard homopolymer, and being either a homopolymer with so low a tendency to crystallize that if it is capable of crystallizing its crystalline melting point is less than 20 DEG C., or a copolymer. The examples describe the polymerization in a liquid hydrocarbon medium and in the presence of a mixture of titanium trichloride and diethylaluminium monochloride or ethylaluminium sesquichloride of the following combinations of olefines: (1-2) ethylene followed by a mixture of ethylene and propylene, (3) ethylene followed by a mixture of ethylene and butene-1, and (4) a mixture of ethylene and propylene followed by ethylene.
