Apparatus for the disposal of sanitary towels includes a rotary impeller 3 coacting with a cutting ring 4, and a cover 13, which when closed starts a normally-inoperative motor 1 and initiates a water flow which is in two streams, one flowing down a shoot 10 towards the impeller, and the other being supplied to the impeller and discharged therefrom under centrifugal force to flow over the lower part of the shoot and over the ring 4. As described, water is supplied by a pipe 18 to a chamber 19 at the upper end of the shoot 10. A pipe 20 extends from the bottom of the chamber 19 and communicates with a channel 6, the water passing around a seal 7 so,as to be discharged from the impeller 3 via'an opening 12. A dam 22 formed in the chamber 19 causes the water to flow over it into a channel 21 and thence through the space between the lower edge 16 of a tubular guide member 15 and the case 10. The channel 21 is of relatively small crosssection so that water rapidly overflows from the ring 21 and down the inner wall of the shoot 10 to, the disc 17, whereby the water is uniformly distributed around the inner' wall of the shoot. The shoot includes a drain overflowoutlet 23 connected by a pipe 24 to the main drain-outlet 26 for use if the apparatus is jammed or choked. A lid-operated switch 27 is included in the motor circuit, and also controls a water-supply solenoid valve. A further switch is actuated by water pressure so that the motor cannot start in the absence of a water supply;' and the motor is stopped by a time delay device after a specified grinding time, e.g. 30 seconds. A resilient finger assembly 17 prevents free fall of material into the grinding zone until the motor has started and the' material is wetted. Detergent, disinfectant or deodorant substances' may be added to the water in the chamber.
