Headings B4B and B5K [Also in Division B3] A machine for joining in overlapping relation a plurality of webs, e.g. of coated paper, woven or synthetic plastic materials, comprises first means for producing in the webs a plurality of partial perforations with tabs retained adjacent the perforations and second means for acting upon said tabs to fold them against one of the webs. The machine comprises a pair of guide rolls 38, 40, pairs of intermittently driven rotary punch and die rolls 6, 14, and calender rolls 22, 30, guide roll 50 and web release and tab fold back plates 56, 58. The punch roll comprises a plurality of spacers 70 between which are mounted punch discs 72 having teeth 74 keyed to a shaft 8, the die roll being similarly constructed with reduced diameter axially spaced discs 78 in alignment with the punches. The one piece upper and lower calender rolls have grooved and plain surfaces respectively. In operation, the leading end of a sheet or strip 98a, e.g. of from 0.004 to 0.065 inch thick and from 2 to 72 inch wide, is fed over the top of a moving sheet 98 until its leading edge is just past the nip of the rolls 22, 30. When the trailing end of the sheet 98 is in the desired position the cycle selector and start-stop switches of an electro-pneumatic control system are operated to start an electric motor 132 which drives the calender rolls 22, 30 and a clutch unit 138 and the upper roll 22 lowered against springs 106 by a pneumatic motor 64 driving eccentric cams 92 against loading rods 94 to press the sheets 98a, 98 together so that they move as one through the joiner. Subsequently the pneumatically-operated clutch 138 is energized to drive the geared rolls 6, 14, the required number of revolutions, e.g. 2 to 10, to punch the sheet to form tabs 98b which are further deflected against the web of the lower sheet by the fold over edges 86 of the recesses 80 in the leading edge of the plate 58, the plate 56 acting as a stripper member to disengage the sheets from the punches 74, and finally substantially flattened by passing between the calender rolls 22, 30. Upon completion of the required revolutions, the clutch 138 is disengaged, the punch rolls stopped with the punchless portion 100 adjacent to the sheet, the calender rolls stopped and the upper roll raised. The punch roll may be a one-piece unit with cutting teeth attached thereto. The calender rolls may be omitted and/or replaced by further deflecting plate members. If they are omitted, additional plain driving rolls are fitted to assist in driving the sheets through the joiner. The positions of the upper and lower rolls may be reversed in which case the leading end of the sheet is fed to the underside of the trailing sheet.
