Abstract

Crude alkaline alginate solution, obtained from brown algae by means of alkali, is treated with an amount of hypochlorate, hypobromite, chlorine, bromine or mixtures thereof insufficient to cause complete bleaching of the alginate solution and the alginic acid is precipitated. This acid, or an alkali metal alginate prepared there-from is then subjected to bleaching with chlorine dioxide. In one embodiment an alginate solution containing 0.1-0.5% by weight of alginic acid, prepared by alkali treatment of laminaria digitata and laminaria cloustonii, is treated with a quantity of hypochloride, hypobromite, &c., in aqueous solution at 0-60 DEG C. such that it is used up in 3-10 minutes by a 0.1% alginate solution. The alginic acid is then precipitated with mineral acid, and some of the liquid is removed from the suspension by flotation sedimentation or centrifuging. The suspension (1-8% solids) is then treated with chlorine dioxide in amount 10-100% in excess of that which is consumed by the alginic acid in 1 hour.Excess chlorine dioxide is removed by a reducing agent. Alkali metal alginates prepared from alginic acid thus bleached in two stages have increased viscosities.
