Abstract

A quenching device for the continuous heat treatment of sectional steel which has a configuration surrounding the section on all sides and conformed to the sectional shape comprises separate independently controllable sprinkler bodies which are co-ordinated to individual portions of the section, at least on one side, so that, due to the distribution in number and size of the discharge openings for the quenching liquid, portions of the section with different wall thicknesses are sprinkled with different quantities of liquid. As shown in Fig. 1, the sprinkler bodies 2 are preferably connected in parallel to a feed conduit 4 for the liquid, the connection conduits 12 being fitted with independent regulating valves 13. Interposed flexible hose pieces 14 enable each sprinkler body to be adjustably mounted on to a supporting plate 3 disposed transversely to the passing direction of the section 1 ; the plate 3 being mounted in a casing 5 provided with a drain opening 6. Each sprinkler body (see Fig. 2) may be formed by a pipe length 2 provided with a slotted opening 16 which faces and is parallel to the respective portion of the section. The length of the opening may be varied by axially shiftable sleeve bodies 15 inserted in the ends of the pipe length. The direction of the impinging jet may be varied by turning the body within its mounting bracket 9. Figs. 4 and 5 show a body composed of two coaxially telescopically slidable and relatively turnable pipe lengths 17 and 18 in which the extent of overlapping <PICT:0978312/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0978312/C6-C7/2> <PICT:0978312/C6-C7/3> <PICT:0978312/C6-C7/4> of the slots 16 may be varied, the inner pipe length 18 preferably being provided with a plurality of spaced groups of bores 19, Fig. 5, varying in number and size.
