978,260. Lathes. VEREINIGTE GLANZSTOFF-FABRIKEN A.G. Dec. 12, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962], No. 49160/63. Headings B3B and B3T. A method of facilitating the optical measurement of minute workpieces (not shown) during machining comprises bringing the workpiece into measuring position together with a workbench 3 by pivoting and displacing the machinebed 2 on a foundation plate 1. The lathespindle is driven by a belt 12 from a motor 10 mounted on the bed 2, plate 1 or on the foundation itself (not shown). At least three ball or roller bearings 26, 28 in recesses in the bed 2 or foundation plate 1 support the bed on the foundation, clearance between pegs 27, 29 on the bed and the bearings permitting adjustment of the bed by means of screws 6, 7 in brackets 4, 5 which may pivot. A rubber abutment or a spring 25 engages the opposite side of the bed to that engaged by the screws. A turntable 14, having an abutment 21 operating between adjusting screws 19, 20, carries an arm 13 mounting on each side of a handle 17 an optical device 16 for viewing the work during machining and an optical device 15 for measuring. During movements of the bed, it may be supported on a cushion of liquid or gas, such as air, issuing from nozzles in the plate 1.
