Abstract
The invention comprises a 3,31-methylenebis (4-aliphatic-oxyaniline) in which each aliphaticoxy group contains 3 or more carbon atoms, and a process for its preparation by condensing the appropriate aliphatic-oxy aniline with formaldehyde (or a formaldehyde precursor) in presence of an acid catalyst. The preparation of 3,31-methylene bis (4-n-heptyloxyaniline) by this method is exemplified. Other methods mentioned are reduction of the product of condensing an aliphatic-oxy nitrobenzene with formaldehyde or with an aliphatic-oxy nitrobenzyl chloride. A number of specific compounds within the scope of the invention are listed.ALSO:A vulcanisable rubber composition is characterised by the presence of sulphur or a sulphur-containing vulcanising agent, and a methylene bis (aliphatic-oxyaniline), e.g. 3,31-methylenebis (2-, 4- or 6-ethoxyaniline); 3,31-methylenebis (4-methoxyaniline); or 3131-methylenebis (4-n-heptyloxyaniline). The preferred sulphur-containing agent is a benzthiazylsulphonamide e.g. N-cyclohexyl -2- benzthiazylsulphonamide. Examples describe the vulcanisation of natural rubber, styrene-butadiene and cis-1, 4-polyisoprene.
