978,238. Moulding foamed resin articles. CHAMPLAIN - ZAPATA PLASTICS MACHINERY Inc. Nov. 2, 1962 [April 18, 19621, No. 41644/62. Heading B5A. A method of moulding pre-expanded plastic beads comprises the steps of filling the mould with said beads while it is being heated without supplying steam to the mould cavity, feeding steam into the mould so that the beads expand further and coalesce, and supplying water to cool the mould, in the absence of cooling water within the mould, in order to obtain a substantially dry product. In the apparatus illustrated the beads are fed through the opening 52 into the mould cavity 12 and steam or water is circulated through the mould jackets 14 and 16 which have inlets 38, 44 and outlets 40 and 48, the opening 50 to the jacket 16 being used as either an inlet or outlet. Air and condensed steam are removed from the mould during the filling and cooling steps respectively through the passages 20 and chamber 18 by a suction pump, which is also operated while the mould is opened to hold the article against the ejector means. Steam is supplied to the mould cavity through the inlet 32, chamber 18 and passages 20, and compressed air is similarly supplied to eject the article subsequent to opening the mould.
