Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula <FORM:0978162/C4-C5/1> wherein D is the residue of a monoazo or phthalocyanine dye which contains one or two primary or secondary amino groups through which it is linked to the -SO2- group, X is an electronegative group (i.e. a group which is capable of withdrawing electrons from the bond linking the pyridinium group to the benzene ring), Z is a chlorine or bromine atom m is 1 or 2 and n is 1 or 2, provided that the dyes contain at least 2 sulphonic acid groups when m is 1 and at least 3 sulphonic acid groups when m is 2. The dyes are prepared by treating a dye of formula <FORM:0978162/C4-C5/2> with pyridine in an aqueous medium, preferably at 20-100 DEG C. The intermediate dyes are prepared by condensing an amino-azo or -phthalocyanine dye with a suitable halobenzene-sulphonyl halide. Specified aminoazo dyes include copper, chromium and cobalt complexes. The dyes may be used to colour cellulose textile materials in the presence of an acid-binding agent and woolen textiles from a mildly alkaline, neutral or acid dyebath. Examples describe the preparation of the dyes and the dyeing of cellulose materials. Specitions 529,847, 569,200, 589,118, 717,137 and 724,212 are referred to.
