Abstract

Edible fats (see Division C5) are obtained from (a) triglycerides of tall oil fatty acids and (b) an edible fat having a C16- 18-fatty acid content higher than that of the tall oil fatty acids by (i) randomly interesterifying blends of (a) and (b), (ii) by reacting (b) with glycerol and then further reacting the product with tall oil fatty acids, or (iii) by reacting (b), glycerol and tall oil fatty acids together. (i) is suitably performed in the presence of sodium methoxide as catalyst, while (ii) and (iii) are generally carried out in the presence of SnSO4 or SnCl2.2H2O; in (iii) a small amount of soap flakes may also be added. Particularly suitable fats (b) are beef tallow, hydrogenated tallow and palm oil. Specification 978,085 is referred to.ALSO:Edible fat compositions, which provide suitable bases e.g. for margarine, comprise (a) triglycerides of tall oil fatty acids and (b) an edible fat having a C16-18-fatty acid content higher than that of the tall oil acids. The compositions may be produced (i) by merely blending (a) and (b), (ii) by randomly interesterifying (a) and (b), (iii) by reacting (b) with glycerol, and then further reacting the product with tall oil fatty acids, or (iv) by reacting (b), glycerol and tall oil fatty acids together. (ii) Is suitably performed in the presence of sodium methoxide as catalyst, while (iii) and (iv) are generally carried out in the presence of SnSO4 or SnCl2.2H2O; in (iv) a small amount of soap flakes may also be added. The products of reactions (i) and (ii) usually have a Wiley M.P. of about 47 DEG C., while the product of reaction (iv) normally has a Wiley M.P. of 30-40 DEG C. and is then blended with a harder fat to produce a product having a Wiley M.P. of about 47 DEG C. Particularly suitable fats (b) are beef tallow, hydrogenated tallow, and palm oil. If desired, the product may be hardened by hydrogenating at upwards of 375 DEG F. under a pressure of 5 p.s.i.g. in the presence of 0.05% nickel as catalyst. Specification 978,085 is referred to.
