Abstract

978,019. Gas chromatography. COMMUNAUTE EUROPEENNE DE L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 13, 1962 [June 15, 1961], No. 22722/62. Heading B1L. In a method for the analysis by gas chromatography of a liquid mixture, which may contain components with widely different boiling points, using a stream of carrier gas and a column packed with solid particles coated with a solvent, maintained at constant temperature, the rate of flow of the stream of carrier gas through the column is increased at least once during the analysis whereby sharp, distinctly-spaced peaks on the chromatogram are obtained for the individual components of the mixture. The rate of flow of carrier gas is preferably increased at points in time predetermined from a preliminary chromatogram of the mixture, obtained using a column operated with a constant rate of flow of carrier gas. Carrier gas from source 1 flows into pressureregulator 2, and the gas then passes on to column 6 via three-way valve 3 and either or both of two different flowpaths 4 and 5 of different flow-resistance. These flowpaths are each provided with flow control means, e.g. capillary tubing, an orifice, a diaphragm, or porous filling. In operation, valve 3 is first positioned so that the carrier gas flows to the column 6 via the flowpath of higher resistance At the desired time, as determined by a preliminary test, valve 3 is operated to switch the gas flow to the flowpath of lower resistance whereby the rate of flow of gas in the column is increased. An example relates to the analysis of a mixture of ortho-, meta-, and paraterphenyl, triphenyl, ortho-meta-quaterphenyl, and 1,2,4-triphenylbenzene, dissolved in benzene, using hydrogen as carrier gas and a column packed with diatomaceous earth impregnated with a silicone grease. The analysis of a mixture of hexane, benzene, tetraline and alpha-tetralone is also exemplified.
