Abstract

977,771. Electric motors. N.S.F. Ltd. June 7,1961 [June 21, 1960], No. 21708/60. Heading H2A. An electromagnetically operated device for imparting a rotary motion to a shaft comprises a solenoid 8 having an armature 1 movable linearly towards the solenoid; a cam system comprising a fixed plate and a movable plate 10 having co-operating arcuate recesses 12 of varying depths and ball 12A in the recesses; and a friction coupling 11 between the plate 10 and the armature 1. Energization of the solenoid attracts the armature forcing the cam plate 1 into engagement with a fixed plate formed by the casing of solenoid 8 and imparting a rotary motion to plate 10, and via the friction coupling 11 to the armature 1. The armature carries a plate 2 in which is mounted a pin 18, and this engages with a fork 20 mounted on the shaft 3 so that rotation of the armature rotates also the shaft. On de-energization of the solenoid the friction coupling is released and the plate 10 returns under the action of the spring 15 without rotating the armature. A hook 13 engaging with a lever 16 is provided to operate the contacts 21 to energize and de-energize the solenoid. The switch 21 may be operated also by pin 19 to break the energizing circuit, and to determine the point at which the circuit is broken, the pin may be inserted into any of a number of holes in plate 2. For rotation in either direction, two solenoids may be used back to back. Specification 602,812 is referred to.
